TROY BASS Roofing is proud to announce that each and every one of it’s custom metal roof panels have qualified for the Class 4 rating under Underwriters Laboratories UL 2218 test standard for “Impact Resistance of Roofing Materials”. The class 4 rating is the highest rating for which a roofing material can be considered. This means that when you specify or use TROY BASS Roofing, you can be assured you are getting the most impact resistant roof available.

The UL 2218 test standard was mandated by insurance companies due to the large losses they have absorbed in recent years from hail damaged roofs. In order to provide the insurance companies with a way to predict possible hail damage without severely limiting the consumer’s choices, a rating system was developed. Roof coverings that pass this UL test standard are classified as either Class 1, 2, 3 or 4; with Class 4 being the most impact resistant. In certain areas of Texas, roofs with UL rated materials can qualify for an insurance premium discount up to 35%. Call your insurance company to find out if they give discounts for “Impact Resistant” roofs. To check mandatory discounts by counties you may call the Texas Board of Insurance by phone at 800-252-3439 or check their website at www.tdi.state.tx.us.

Metal roofing is defined differently by various performance criteria in codes, standards, and incentive programs.  Our metal roofs have relatively high solar reflectance and high thermal emissions.

Cool Metal Roofing

During the daylight hours, a roof is constantly subjected to solar energy striking its surface.  The term “Solar Reflectance” is a measure of the amount of that solar energy that is immediately reflected from the surface. It is not reflected heat, but reflected electromagnetic energy from the sun.  Solar reflectance is reported as a decimal (0 – 1.00) or as a percentage (0-100%).  The solar energy that is not reflected away from the surface is absorbed into the outer surface of the roof product and is converted into heat. The heat can be removed by convection as air flows over the surface, or by conduction through the roof material into the sheathing below. The energy that is left can also be re-emitted to the night sky in the form of infrared energy. That re-emitted energy is referred to as thermal emissions, which is also expressed as a decimal (0 – 1.00) or as a percentage (0-100%).

Our metal roofs with high solar reflectance and high thermal emissions would have a lower surface temperature as compared to a conventional shingle roofs with low reflectance and low emissions. In the case of a cool metal roof, a lower surface temperature translates into less heat gain into the attic space or living space below the roof.  The result is a cooler living space and lower cooling/heating energy consumption, which in turn lowers air conditioning costs and energy production at the power plant. Studies have shown that a metal roof can save a building owner as much as 20% in their cooling energy costs.  In addition, by reducing energy production at the power plants, greenhouse gases that are emitted in the production process are thereby reduced.  Many metal roofing systems are Energy Star labeled and meet other cool roof requirements in codes and standards.

Possible tax incentives using economical friendly metal roofing

The Federal Energy Policy Act of 2005 (EPAct 2005) includes a section on energy conservation and tax incentives.  For renovation of existing residential dwellings, a prepainted Energy Star labeled metal roof can qualify the homeowner for up to a $500 tax credit in years 2006 and 2007.  For an eligible homeowner to receive the tax incentives, TROY BASS Roofing provides a manufacturer’s certificate assuring that the metal roof installed meets the requirements in EPAct 2005. The EPAct 2005 was designed to expire at the end of 2007, but Congress has already passed some bills to extend portions of the Act until 2010. More extensions and revised provisions are expected to be passed by the 110th Congress. For more information on the latest updates please visit: www.energytaxincentives.org

Also metal roofing is 100% recyclable at the end of its useful life. This is in stark contrast to conventional roofing materials which has next to no recyclable content.  The recycled content of metal has proven to be important to state and local municipalities listing metal as “green” in their solid waste districts or departments of natural resources. This helps to eliminate the waste stream to landfills, where most all of conventional roofing products end up.  Each year about 20 billion pounds of old composition roofing shingles are dumped into US landfills. So choosing a impact resistant metal roof not only saves you money in the long run but it is also good for the environment.
